Le site enchanteur de Fontaine

Fontaine de Vaucluse never ceases to intrigue and attract tourists. Since the Antiquity, the site has already often been visited. New archaeological discoveries show that there was an important cult of water. At the end of the green gorge, at the feet of a magnificent cliff sculpted by erosion, the most beautiful river of the department springs from the underground: La Sorgue de Vaucluse River, a few yards from the picturesque village from which the valley gets its name.

With an average flow of 630 million m3 of water per year, the spring is one of the first in Europe, and one of most important worldwide. It comes from a vast underground network. Fresh and peaceful in winter and summer, bubbling and wild in autumn and spring, the spring is a true freak of nature and never ceases to amaze.

At the end of the 19th century, happens the first diving attempt in the flooded conduit of La Sorgue River (shaped like a 308m deep vertical funnel.) More than a century of bold explorations allowed a better understanding of the mystery of its functioning. In all seasons, the secondary springs flow into La Sorgue and constitute a beautiful lake shaded by centuries-old plane trees.
